How2fix – Getting online with a Dial-Up 56k modem, with no disk

May 25, 2014 in General Info

                                                                   *  How2fix – Getting online with a Dial-Up 56k modem, with no disk   *

To get online with a Dial-Up 56k modem, with no disk, normally, there would be a disk supplied by an internet service provider, that u might have picked up from a magazine, or through ur letterbox, etc.

Firstly and most importantly there are still many parts of this world of ours that just does not have the infrastructure for broadband but do have a telephone network and this all you need for a dial up service. This reduced service is not as you may think, only in third world countries, this is also in parts of of America, UK, Europe and everywhere else or more correctly,  although is just not of good enough quality to have broadband coverage, it is more than adequate for dial up,

Secondly, it is still ‘free’ access, i use free reservedly and loosely as you still get charged through your phone whilst you are using it, but there is no monthly charge, payg basically.

Thirdly and another scenario where it would be useful, if you have lost the use of your broadband and require your cd to re-install the driver and it is scratched, (a scenario where i once had the same thing happen), then creatin a dial-up account so you could still go online and download the modem’s driver would get you goin again.

You might think why and who would want to use an old dial up modem to get access to the internet., well believe or not there are still approximately 10% of American’s are still using dial up. Apparently, AOL still sells over $600 million worth of dial-up internet access every year.

It’s the same story in the UK, according to Oftel, there are still around 800,000 homes using dial-up even though BT, (UK’s biggest, if not as a an internet provider, then definitely as BT phones being used to access the internet.), terminated their dial up service 1st Sept last year.

To get around the problem of not havin a disk and to stop loading more crap onto ur computer than is needed, use the following instructions:

1. Go to the ‘Start button, then choose ‘Run’ and when the resulting run applet appears

2. type into the text box, ‘ICWConn1’ (without the apostrophy’s), this is not case sensitive so capitals or lower case iz fine.

3. The next applet 2 appear will be the Internet Connection Wizard, hence the ICWCONN1, this will give u 3 options.

Option 1 – if u r signing up 4 a new account then just click on the ‘Next’ button or press, ‘Enter’.

Option 2 – for transferring your existing account to to this computer.

Option 3 – for setting up your account manually, for this options u really need 2 know all of the following email info and settingz

ie; your user name, your password, the isp’s telephone number that will connect you to the internet, etc

But as in this instance you are most likely creating a new account, so choose number-1 and just press ‘Enter’ again

you will be then be presented with an applet that may want you to select your country but will will require your area code entered

and computer will then log on to the internet to a list of ISP’z for your area.

3. Just pick one, virgin or talktalk are reasonable choices, they will each have options of; pay as you go, (payg), 24/7 or broadband,

4. Once u have picked choose next and your computer will log off the internet then back on agin to the zite u have picked.

5. Just fill in your personal details and within 10minz u will have your own email account,

6. You can take a copy of the page that shows u all ur email details, by holding down the ‘Ctrl’ button and press the ‘P’ key.

-> If u do not have a printer then hold down the ‘Shift’ key and hit ‘Print Screen’ key, this will copy your entire screen to your clipboard.

-> then then ‘Start’

-> accessories

-> open ms-paint, when it has opened

-> hold down the Ctrl’ and press the ‘V’ key and the entire screen-shot will appear as a picture in side the ‘paint’ program,

-> go to ‘File’ and ‘Save’ and give it a descriptive name to remember.and hit ‘Enter

Now just finish off the web page instructions for your account and u should have an icon of Virgin, Wanadoo or what ever one u picked on ur desktop, double click on it and u will go back on line to their website, u r now online and paying for it.

If for some reason it has not gone worked it maybe that they are busy so give it a half hour or so and try again.

How To Fix An Overheating Laptop

September 3, 2013 in Laptop Repairs

******** How To Fix An Overheating Laptop ********

Hiya gal’z n’ boy’z, jakkadan here again, watch as I fix an overheating dell inspiron-1545 gpu and cpu, with a minor but relatively cheap modification that worked fine on this machine.
BTW you can access this and many other laptop and pc repair tutorial videos plus instructional text that go with each through youtube, these are further similar videos that i haven’t got round adding to this site yet and still free, for now at least.
Registration is still free too.

Many of the videos and articles are also free, I will also soon have my computer repair book of the same name as my website published with amazon.
This will cover all servicing and maintenance for any computer so that they last you 4-5 years rather than the present 1-2 years, if u r lucky enough.
To view this video left click anywhere on the video.

Now for the job in hand.
This machine had obviously not completely damaged the graphics processing unit, (gpu), as this was the chip that was getting the hottest, probably somewhere in the region of 95 degrees plus celsius, which is way, way too hot.

All it cost me was some time, about 23 minutes n’ the cost of a couple of ‘specially cut’ pure copper shims at; 1.5mm thick by about 15mm square.
you can get these through the internet for about, £2.00- £5.00 each, because there is a whole new’ish business out there due to the plethora of laptops that are overheating because of inefficient heat sinking mechanisms.
So the shims i am using are made of pure copper and because of this they can be up to 40% more efficient than the normal copper that is used in computers for heat sinks and can reduce the cpu and gpu temperature’s by, between 10 to 20 degrees celsius.

I also show a good example of how a heat-sinking mechanism should be designed in this video tutorial, from a laptop that is probably bout 8 years old made by a company whom i believe is ‘Gericom’, a German manufacturer.

Of course the other enemy of your laptop, that amny are not fully aware of when it comes to your heat sinking capabilities is the the accumulation of dust n’ fluff on the inside edge of the heat sinking ‘fins’ very evident in this video.

If u want to unblock these sufficiently enough to ‘reduce’ the over-heating right away, these following tips will give you some breathing space whilst you think about of using the method in this video, or are waiting for ur shims to come in.

1.
So, if you block up part of the output air vents, to the side or back of your laptop, netbook, etc (this is a grilled opening, where u will feel hot air is coming out), with masking tape or even sellotape.

2.
Next, remove any panels from underneath, so that as much of the dust as possible leaves the laptop and doesn’t just get re-deposited on all the other components, only get put back where it came from in a short space of time.

3.
Now over the remaining aperture, place your mouth and blast as hard as you can using your lungs, (close your eyes as you ‘blow’ or you may get loads of dust in them}.

4.
If this doesn’t shift any dust n’ fluff or your ‘blow’ isn’t strong enough then take it to your local garage and ask them if you can use their ‘air’ line and blast some through the output aperture, just don’t put it too close or you may end up lifting some components out of their housing’s
Then blow a few ‘squirts’ through the fan input vent to clear the build up of dust n’ fluff on the surface and rising edges of the fan’s fins.
You should see some or lots of dust flying out of every orifice, the whole process shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds or so.
5.
If however it is still over-heating then you will need to; at a minimum take it apart to get rid of any really stubborn dust n’ fluff and replace the thermal paste with a good ‘metal’ based paste.
NB: But remember ‘more’ paste does not necessarily mean a better fix, you need no more than the size of a pea at most for each ‘chipset’.
For the cost of the two pure copper shims you may need, (if u have a separate grafix chip) it seems practical to me to do them at the same time, you’ve got the laptop apart why not just do it at the same time.

In my opinion and from experience, the companies to avoid for ‘inherent’ overheating problems are mainly Hewlett Packard, Compaq, Packard Bell, (now owned by Acer) and some of the higher-end Dell’s too now.
FYI: As you probably know, a good source of information about problems like this are websites like youtube, vimeo, etc whom have many videos on many subjects often pointing out the ‘pitfalls’ and pro’s in the use of many manufacturers and their products.

In my opinion and from experience, the companies to avoid for ‘inherent’ overheating problems are mainly Hewlett Packard, Compaq, Packard Bell, (now owned by Acer) and some of the higher-end Dell’s too now.

So if you want to ensure your laptop does ‘not die’ of ‘graphics chip overheating’ before 18 months is up, then u should think hard about whether you want to chance these brands, especially the hp n’ compaq ones, u probably know they are the same company now, (about eight years ago, i think).

Some good examples of the more robust ones when it comes to heat-sinking capabilities are; IBM, Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony, Acer, eMachine, Gericom, Clevo, Advent, etc, to name a few. the later of these are often generally viewed as the cheaper options for some odd reason!!

How To Re-Install a New LCD/TFT-CCFL Screen To A Dell Inspiron-1525

September 3, 2013 in Laptop Repairs

hey there, ladies n’ lads, jakkadan here again,
Watch me show you how to re-Install a new LCD/TFT-CCFL screen to a Dell Inspiron-1525 laptop and see how quick n’ easy it is to do, eh??

I have already removed the old lcd/tft ccfl screen, (in a separate video which i cannot locate right now), so this is just the re-installation of the new screen.

This is my new website – www.how2fixlaptopsandpcs4dimwits.com – named after my soon to be published book of the ‘exact’ same name.

To view this video single left click anywhere on the video.

Watch this video to see how to install the new screen, bit by bit, with nothing more than a small, ‘phillips’ or ‘posidrive’ screwdriver, (don’t use the electric ones it just isn’t worth it), they are only small screws and u definitely do not want to over tighten them.
this particular Dell Inspiron had one of the older type of lcd/tft screens, a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) type.
fyi: this is exactly what it says it is, usually just one white light fluorescent tube, much like the one u may have in your kitchen but whiter and much smaller and it’s only function is to supply a white light source.
White light is used because ‘electronically’ it comprises of all the colours of the ‘visible’ spectrum, blue through to red, so this is where the, TFT, (thin film transistor), display gets it’s range of colours from, for the colour required at each pixel, ie: the picture on your screen.

Apparently the, ‘ccfl’ type screens are no longer manufactured and led’s are their replacement but meanwhile and, before they become mainstream there are companies that are supplying, ‘ccfl’ to ‘led’ kits so can end up with an led screen which are much cheaper to purchase now.
The lcd/tft led screens do not generate any heat, therefore are more energy efficient and are extremely cheap to fabricate, and, in theory, at least, will last much longer before they start to produce dead pixels and then on to whole lines of dead pixels.

They also do not require the added the 12volt circuit board to charge up the choke or capacitor to ‘start up’  the fluorescent lamp, so less energy efficient the the led type of lamps too.

With this laptop screen repair, I managed to get a lcd/tft-ccfl replacement at a good price, so u won’t see the new ccfl to led converter kit used here. The LED is short for light emitting diode and it is the new source of white light used for LCD/TFT’s fabricated the last few years.

Even though each laptop from each manufacturer varies a little from laptop to laptop, they all come apart, essentially the same way and the; ccfl-tft/lcd and led-tft/lcd screen replacements, dc-jack repairs, motherboard replacements, etc, are all pretty much the same.

In answer to remarks such as; ‘this is so slow’, n’ ‘like watching paint dry’, etc, so some of these videos are not for the clever clogg’sies who make these inane comments and who probably already know how to do this work.

my videos take longer to do because;

1. I am trying ensure that the laptop’s screen or any other work I am carrying out, is showing toward the camera.

2. have to try to make sure that everything i am doing throughout the duration is still in view.

3. keep a running commentary going, on whatever aspect of the work is being carried out.

4. occasionally having to deal with customers to my shop, so sometimes i loose track of where i was so they can seem a bit     disjointed.

this is all for the benefit of viewer’s who are maybe wishing to carry out this repair for themselves and want to understand every process i carry out and do not want to keep on having to pause the video.

i also try to  make sure there is not too much being left out because in my opinion, I find many other repair videos are not tutorials, coz they do leave out too much or don’t completely explain what or why they are carrying out a particular part of a repair.

my aim is; hopefully that you get to learn exactly what and why you need to carry out every part of a repair and in what order, so that you able do this repair for yourself.

nb: I do mess up sometimes and forget to zoom back out after focusing on some aspect of the job or move the computer so it goes go outside of what u can see on the video.
so if u notice this, please leave a comment to let me know so i can try to put it right, or even make another video or u can sign up as a member to my site (for the time being it is free).

That way u can contact me directly, without your comments or input it is difficult to get all them just right, I don’t have time to go through each and every video before I upload them.

I fix laptop’z and pc’z for a living and i have been videoing most of my laptop and PC repairs, so i have hundreds of laptop n’ pc repair tutorial videos.
so it might be worth registering as a member just to get access, (by request) to these, of course ideally, eventually i want to get them all up on to youtube and linked from my site but I am making them quicker than I can upload them, so…..

How2 Install a New Motherboard Bundle to an ATX Case

August 9, 2013 in Uncategorized

hey there, lady’z n’ germ’z, jakkadan here again, watch az i install a new motherboard bundle into a new full atx tower caze. to let u see how easy it is to do.
btw; u can get access to my videos and how2 do help files on all sorts of other computer based topics at my new site:
http://how2fixlaptopsandpcs4dimwits.com
talkin about ‘motherboard bundles’ here reminds me that it was my business partner n’ I who first to put one of these bundles together at the ‘british computer fairs’ we used to do way bak in 98/99
we just put some of old mother boards, graphics card, and ram, together and put it on a motherboard box, labelled it “all u need now is a case and hard-drive” and these bundles started to ‘fly’ out
before we knew it we were repairin people’s pc’s too so we had to take on an extra table. but it wasn’t long b4 we got all the copy-cats.

i know there will a few out of u there that will say huh? that’z dead eazy but it iz alwayz n’ only dead eazy when u know how 2.
thiz video iz not for u clever clog’z, it’z 4 the people that don’t how 2 do it n’ want 2 know how to, okay.

but even clever clog’z might learn a thing or two coz i ramble a lot az i am working n’ it iz quite often about interezting or uninterezting factz about or maybe not about pc’z.

i am not saying by any means that there is nothing i don’t know, far from it, even now after 30 odd years of playin and workin with them, they still all too often make me feel like an apprentice. So anyone that tells you that they know everything there is to know about computers, my advice would be to run away from them as quickly as you can.

I have been around them since the cp/m n’ pre-dos dayz so if u don’t know what one or both of these termz r then i at leazt know more than u do, eh? ;-/
btw; sorry about the wobbly camera but i was lettin my 14yr old Thai stepson handle the camera, what could i say, he’s new to the UK and he wanted 2 help me 😉
i hopes this helps, {~_^}

How2 Get Windows To Run Up To 10x Faster

August 9, 2013 in Uncategorized

How2 Get Windows To Run Up To 10x Faster

I have watched many, ‘how to’ video’s and read many ‘how to’ articles on ‘how to’ speed up your computer and your, Win XP, Vista, etc but for some reason, none of them seem to go as far as I do.
So I would like to take this opportunity to show you how I speed up my computers and with just a few tweaks how I can get get them up to 10 times faster.
This is how I set up every machine that comes into my shop from my customers and all of my outgoing machines, 2nd user or brand new.

This set of instructions is for computer with any version of Win-XP installed, if you learn how to do these you will be able to do the same tweak’z in Vista and Win-7, they are just a little different.

This is the process from the beginning to the end, in the order that I do it:

To Customize ‘Taskbar and Start menu Properties’, I start by right-clicking on the :

1. ‘Start’ button and then left-click on ‘Properties’, from the list of options,
1a. Then from the resulting, ‘Taskbar and Start menu Properties’ applet,
1b To customize the Taskbar. I choose the ‘Taskbar’ tab at the top.
1c. I then take the ‘tick’ out of ‘Lock the taskbar’ by left clicking on the tick, it then disappears, so do the same to the rest.
1d. Left click on the tick to the, ‘Choose ‘Auto hide the taskbar,

1e. Left click on the tick to the ‘Show Quick Launch’ bar and finally

1f. Left click on the tick to the, ‘Hide inactive icons’ to ‘unhide active icons.

Now to Customize the ‘Start Menu’
2. I then choose the, ‘Start Menu’ tab at the top, then,

2a. Left click on the ‘Customise’,

2b. Left click on the ‘Small Icons’, radio button, a black dot will appear inside it.

NB: A set of radio button options is a set of small round white coloured discs, where one of them has a black dot in the middle, when you click on one of the other white coloured ones the black dot moves to the one you have chosen and visa versa,

NNb:The tick in the little square boxes has a similar principle but with these, when you click on the tick, the tick appears and when you click on it again, the tick disappears.

Continuing with Customising the ‘Start Menu’.

3. I put the ‘Number of programs on Start Menu’, up to 15 or 20 then to make more advanced changes, choose the, ‘Advanced’ tab at the top.

3a. In the centre there is a ‘Start Menu Items’ box is coloured in white, to the right there is a scrollbar, scroll down to the bottom, using left mouse button.

3c. Click in the space above the scroll and items will go up in one page at a time, and a click in the run command and printers and faxes, under and network connections display as ‘ rollup again Connect to’ menu.

3d. There is a tick box for enable dragging and dropping, it is your choice if you want to put it in this box, personally, I don’t support dragging and dropping, I’d rather cut/copy n’ then paste to the new destination.

Then, finally, click on ‘Ok at the bottom, when the applet disappears, now click on, ‘Apply’.

NB:  I even speed up the mouse

4. Speeding up the mouse
Now go to the ‘Start’ button, left click, choose ‘Control Panel’, go the ‘Mouse’ icon, double left click and
4a. Go to ‘Pointer Options’ tab at the top.

4b. In the ‘Motion’ options part near the top, ‘Select a pointer speed’, grab the slider by left clicking, holding the left mouse button down on the slider pointer. Then slide it from the middle to the extreme right-hand side and then let the mouse button go.

4c. Make sure the Enhanced Pointer Precision has a tick it’s box

4d. Put a tick in the, ‘Automatically move pointer,,,,’ box, just below and take in show notational pointer at bottom, left click on okay.

4e. Put a tick in the, ‘Show location of pointer,,,,’, at bottom,

4f. Left click on ‘OK’ button to ‘Apply’.

5. Now for some further more advanced ‘tweak’s,

Now you should now get back in the ‘Control Panel’,

5a .Double click on the icon of ‘Administrative Tools’,

5b. Choose ‘Services’, and about six to eight items down you will notice, ‘Automatic Updates’, over the years right back to Win95, I have not trusted MS, whereas my business did, I can’t the amount of times that their Úpdates buggered up his computer, so why, ‘Why try to fix something that isn’t broke’, huh??

5c. So for, ‘Automatic Updates’,  double-click anywhere on it’s line, then

5d. In the ‘Start-up type’, clicking on the downward facing arrow will allow you to choose ‘Disabled’ from the list. Now click on the ‘Stop’ button and left click on the, ‘OK’ button and that’s ‘Automatic Updates’ turned off.

5e. Next, scroll down to ‘Error Reporting Service’, and repeat again; to start-up type, disable it and click on ‘OK” , It has never once worked for me and even now once in a while I will attempt it again and nothing, so,,,

5f. Scroll down and ‘Security Center’ and again repeat the above process; start-up type, disable it and click on ‘OK’. This is the process that is in charge of; updates, firewall, defender, etc so off it goes.

NBB: Comodo is a good enough sekurity package to not require the ineffectual MS ‘security’, it is always gonna let in what ‘it wants to let in so,,, nah, off it too goes

5g. I also disable these following ‘constantly polling for data’ items too;

*windows firewall, i use Comodo’s firewall and that’s the best one there is, no point in having two
**windows defender, this is a pretty useless resource gobbling and inaffectual program
***windows media player scheduler, don’t ever use this player, coz u end with their obnoxious, DRM .wma n’ wmv
****windows search, computers are very quick nowadays no need for asistance in this quarter
*****windows time, if you really need to know the time u can find that within 5 seconds

You may be forgiven for thinking these are necessary, you just have to trust me, they r definitely not needed I have never used any of them, and I very rarely have any windows or sekurity related problems

->6. Now for some speed up oriented tweak’s.

So back in the control panel, double left click on the ‘System’ icon, choose the ‘Hardware’ tab from along the top,

6a. then ‘Advanced’, now, left click on the top, ‘Settings’ button, You are now in ‘Visual Effects’.

6b. Click in the empty white radio button for, ‘Adjust for best performance’, you should now see a black dot in this, Radio button, plus, all tick boxes below should now be, ‘tickless’.

6c. Now click on the ‘Advanced’ tab at the top and the click on the ‘Change’ button

6d. Choose the ‘Custom size’ radio button, this is setting the size of your ‘Virtual Memory.
NBBB:before you can enter any numbers in these boxes, you need to work out what dynamic ram modules you have installed. The value for you virtual ram should be, two and a quarter times you’re installed ram value.

For example:say you have 512MB, then your product would be, 1128 MB, this number would then be entered into both boxes, Initial or Minimum size (MB) and Maximum size (MB).
Setting them this way, prevents the ‘polling for what size is it’z miimum and what is it’z maximum. as they r both the same size no polling has to take place.
If you are unsure, then often it show you an amount that you should use under ‘Recommended;’, closer to the bottom of this applet.

6e. Once you have put in your ram value in both boxes, left click on ‘Set’ button then left click on ‘OK’.

6 f. Now left click on ‘OK’ again.

6g. Now choose the ‘Error Reporting’ button and then choose the, ‘Disable Error Reporting’ round radio button, then click on the ‘OK. button.

6h. Now the go down to the third ‘Settings’ button down, and remove the tick from each of the boxes with ticks in them, by clicking on each tick box, this will remove the tick from each box, and click on okay.

6i. Still in ‘System Properties’, now choose the ‘Remote’ tab from along the top tabs and from the, ‘Remote Assistance options part near the top,

6j. Remove the tick from Allow Remote Assistance ,,,,,,,,,’, now automatic service or anyone can get access to your computer without your permission, (in theory at least, i know different but that is another matter, in the main this doees hold true).
click on the ‘OK’ button and that’s it. This is how,  ‘How2 Get Windows To Run Up To 10x Faster ‘

Voila!! you are done. {^_^}

how2 fix laptop’s n’ pc’s for dimwits – Get an Win-XP computer to run much faster

August 6, 2013 in Laptop Repairs

I have watched many, ‘how to’ video’s and read many ‘how to’ articles on ‘how to’ speed up
your computer and your, Win XP, Vista, etc. But none of them seem to go as far as I do.
So I would like to take this opportunity to show you how I speed up my computers and with
just a few tweaks how I can get get them up to 10 times faster.
This is how I set up every machine that comes into my shop from my customers and all of my
outgoing ‘sold’ machines, 2nd user or brand new.

This set of instructions is for a computer , this means laptop or pc, with any version of Win-XP installed, if you learn of know how to do these you will be able to do the same tweak’z in Vista and Win-7, they are just a little different.

Bear in mind in this particular pc I have juzt finished inztallin XP, so it is absolutely a virgin inztall, so I first create a ‘Restore Point’ and I name it, ‘a virgin inztall’.
To do this just following the next sets of instructions:

So go to:
-> ‘Start’ button, at the bottom left hand corner of your desktop screen

-> ‘All Programs’, in the first row of the first column

-> ‘Accessories’, at the top of the ‘All Program’ files.

-> ‘System Tools’, fourth line down, it’s a folder with other items in it

-> ‘System Restore’, at the bottom, ‘R/Click on ‘System Restore’ line and select ‘Copy’

This will save you time in future. Find a blank part of your desktop and ‘right click’ and select, ‘Paste’. u will now have a shortcut to your ‘System Restore’ program.

-> Double click on the ‘System Restore’ icon. – on the resulting new ‘Restore’ applet,

-> ‘Change the ‘Radio’ button to ‘Create a Restore Point’ with left mouse button

-> Now type in a pertinent name, ie; one you will remember, months ahead

-> Click on the ‘Create’ button and you’ve done it, you have created a ‘Restore Point’

This is the process from the beginning to the end, in the order that I do it:

Now to start cutting back on overheads and weeding out the unwanted, unneeded items

To Customize ‘Taskbar and Start menu Properties’, I start by right-clicking on the Start’ buton :

1. R/Click on ‘Start’ button and then left-click on ‘Properties’, from the list of options,

1a. Then from the resulting, ‘Taskbar and Start menu Properties’ applet,

1b To customize the Taskbar. I choose the ‘Taskbar’ tab along the top.

1c. I then take the ‘tick’ out of ‘Lock the taskbar’ by left clicking on the tick, it will disappear, so no tick, eh?

so now to do the rest.

1d. Left click on the tick to the, ‘Choose ‘Auto hide the taskbar,

1e. Left click on the tick to the ‘Show Quick Launch’ bar and finally

1f. Left click on the tick to the, ‘Hide inactive icons’ to ‘unhide active icons, so no tick, eh?

Now to Customize the ‘Start Menu’

2. I then choose the, ‘Start Menu’ tab at the top, then,

2a. Left click on the ‘Customise’,

2b. Left click on the ‘Small Icons’, radio button, a black dot will appear inside it.

NB: fyi, A set of radio button options is a set of small round white coloured discs, where one of them has a black dot in the middle, when you click on one of the other white coloured ones the black dot moves to the one you have chosen and visa versa,

3c. Click in the space above the scroll and items will go up in one page at a time, and a click in the ‘Run’ command and ‘Printers and Faxes’, under and network connections display as ‘ ‘Connect to’ menu

again Connect to’ menu. Here you were putting ticks in the boxes.

3d. There is a tick box for enable dragging and dropping, it is your choice if you want to put it in this box, personally, I don’t support dragging and dropping, I’d much rather cut/copy n’ then paste, to the new destination, this way it’s much safer for data transfer.

Then, finally, click on ‘Ok at the bottom, when the applet disappears, now click on, ‘Apply’.

Then slide it from the middle to the extreme right-hand side and then let the mouse button go.

how2 fix laptop’s and pc’z 4 dimwit’z – Replacing a 15.6 Led-Tft to a Lenova-g575

August 4, 2013 in Laptop Repairs

This is another how2 fix laptop’s and pc’z 4 dimwit’s repair video  where i  re-install a new 15.6inch led-tft ito the same Lenova-g575 laptop.
This is my new website www.how2fixlaptopsandpcs4dimwits.com – same name as my soon to be published amazon book
Watch me pick up where left off in the vid1  and replace the a new  led/tft screen. this process still takes a bit longer to do because I still keep the laptop’s screen orientated toward the camera and have to keep making sure everything is in view of the camera too, mainly for the benefit of the viewer.
Framerate turned to be different when I had to shut it down due to customer coming my shop, so the video is in two parts, for the first part see just below here:

So hopefully you get to see exactly what you have to do, and in what order, to be able do this repair for urself, each laptop from each manufacturer varies a little from laptop to laptop although essentially all led-tft replacements are pretty much the same.
To see the second part of the video see just below here:

As are the lcd-tft type screen replacements, which are the ones that use, (ccfl) cold cathode flourescent light bulbs for their white light source, that also require an inverter, as opposed to the led bulbs for the white source in the newer types of led-tft screens, that doesn’t need an inverter.

From each white light source in both led and lcd, the tft = thin film transistors, this means at each pixel point there is a transitor that acts as a ‘filter’ and ‘chooses’ the colour that is required, at that pixel-point, at that time, and lets it through to the front as your display, and voila!!, that is how you get your picture on the screen.
The colours at each pixel-point is changing rapidly as you can maybe imagine, so ur graphix card and ur screen are doing 100’s of thousands of iterations per second, phenominal, huh???

I will also be puttin extracts from my soon to be published on amazon book called; ‘how2 fix laptop’s and pc’z 4 dimwit’s’, hence the name of my website,

They will basically be short and long instruction sets on for example;

–> How2 run a ‘disk check; to your hard-drive coz too many people are still not aware of the importance of this most necessary task.

–> How2 and why you should get familiar with the ‘System Restore’ function.
There is a long one on 25+ ways to extend the life of your laptop, this one started as 10 ways,,,,
,
So if you want to know more about fixing ur own computer then check out my how2’z;

–> How2 ‘properly’ speed up your pc or laptop by as much as tenfold.

–> How2 try to’disaster-proof’ your pc or laptop,

Also as promised, a little more background knowledge on the Lenova brand of laptops. I don’t if u know much about Lenova but they make very good laptops, they tend to take more ‘knocks’ than the average laptop and this is because they put more thought into, how they are going to be used, when they design them.

The lids for instance I don’t think they make of tougher plastic but the surfaces are never, ‘nice n’ shiny’ coz nice n’ shiny damage shows up too much. Therefore they can be scratched and you wouldn’t necessarily noticed it too much.

More importantly, they also put their hard-drive into rubber blocks at each corner so that any knocks or impacts to the laptop that are too sharp don’t necessarily get passed on ‘directly’ to the hard-drive.
All laptops should at least have this done.

Most users don’t handle their laptops with kid gloves and this is why they do not last very long. As I have  said many times there is a t least three spinning disks in the average laptop hard drive and they are spinning at 5400rpm which is pretty fast and the plane that these disks are spinning needs to stay the same.

Many owners tend to move them around as if they were books, this results in the disks being forced out of ‘their plane’, and against the reading heads inside the laptop and when this happens too many times, the surfaces get damaged and can’t be read to or written to anymore.
Also, IBM give some of their laptops to Lenova to ‘beef up; much the same as Ford used to give one of their cars to Lotus for ‘beefing up’, for example, the wonderful, lotus escort, lotus cortina etc.

anyway i’m signing off now, see u in the next video repair tutorial,  {~_^}

An Intro To My New Website.

July 19, 2013 in About Us

hey there gal’z n’ guy’z, i finally decided 2 create a domain name n’ host a website site 4 myself instead of lettin someone else, who know’z nothin bout me or anything bout my business, set up yet another website 4 me.

plus it waz high time i finally released, or rather ‘unleashed’ my book of the same title az my website, to the general public.

there were 2 main reasonz 4 creatin this site;

number one:
i noticed during a webinar that amazon.com are now not taking on anymore; ‘how2’ do or ‘how to do’ manuals, help books, instructional books, etc, for the present time az their ‘kindle books’. to me this was a devastating bit of news and i am still hopin that it doesn’t apply to amazon.co.uk or anywhere else in the world, for that matter.

number two:
if i did manage 2 get my book published as a kindle book i wanted 2 have a site where i could also sell it from, there apparently is a premise that says it is good 2 have a website named after a potentially popular book or after the author if they are prolific enough.

it waz devastating 4 me coz i have been tryin to get my book ready to be published for about six months now, i could have had it published by now, but ‘no’ it has to be in ‘perfect english’ n’ grammatically correct too, i’m surprised they don’t want ‘politically’ too.
so to now find out that the biggest single market place in the world has now possibly been closed off 2 me, that was juz fukkin dandy, ehhh?

i could of had the whole damn book rewritten by now if i had juz started from scratch but when u have so many sets, (100’s), it would still be a mammoth task, n’ i juzt wanted it done really quickly.

From the very first set of instructions i wrote back in bout 1993, i wrote as it as if the person whom is going to read it has never even sat down in front of a computer before.
But my book has always been written in a way similar to fone shorthand, only a lot shorter more difficult to read, a legacy from me hakin dayz.
So, when u first look at it it looks like a foreign language but if u juz started at least to try n’ read it, u would find that ur brain would assimilate it ok n’ u would be able to read it fine.
If you r not sure what i mean then read this next paragraph, it is like a foreign language but you should be able to read it fluently and fluidly, u will see what i mean when you have finished it.
Give it a try right now;
i codnult bleveie I cluod tihs;
Arcincdg to sdtieus at Cbadrimge Ureivtsniy, as lnog as eht fsirt dan lsat lrtets rae siltl in pclae, het wdros in bewetnen tehm nac be cleomlptey jbmeuld up nad ouy sluhod slitl be albe to raed tehse wdros asomlt feltnuly.
hte hamun biarn is pterty azimang tnihg, inst it?

So what did u think, could you still read it okay, even though everything in between the first and last letters was completely messed up, it just goes to show you even the subliminal power of our brain.

i am sorry i digressed somewhat there but back on track.
i have been writing my sets of of instructions on how2 do this and how2 do that, for customers since 1993 and bak then, i had called them all, ‘collectively’, ‘how 2 fix computer’s for dummy’s’.
i had even handed many print-off samples of some of it’s contents to quite a few of my friends, customers for example:

-> pages of general keyboard shortcuts

-> another set specifically for word, excel, etc

-> how and why to use system restore’

-> how and why to use, ‘scan disk’,  or ‘check disk’ as it is called now, possibly  the most important task of all,

-> etc

-> etc

most of my sets of instructions were and still are about important procedures that needed to be carried out and come under, the heading of basik ‘maintenance’ for ur computer.
or how to get the most out of ur computer, from the point of ‘speed’ and a ‘reliability’.

the rest were mostly explanatory notes on, for example;

-> what ‘dynamic ram’ is,
-> what a ‘cpu’ is,
-> what is the job of a north bridge
-> what is the job of a south bridge,
-> what is a ‘tft’, etc, etc, etc.

then, one day about four or so years later while i was doing my applied physics degree, 94-98, i heard about his new book out called ‘how to fix pc’s for dummies’.
well!! u can imagine, i was a bit miffed, cos i had been writing mine since win 3.11 and then win-95 first came out, so of course I swore blind they got to hear about my book and ‘stole’/used my title.
but what can you do i hadn’t published mine, win 98 had come out by then and coz my book was still evolving, each time another ‘operating system’ came out, i had to add more to it.
i am still doing that to this very day too, and, it still isn’t published, bummer!!.

I have been working, playing and fixing computers since late 1979, all in all about 34 years, so I have come across so many different ways that computers can go wrong or stop working altogether over these  years.

Although I did quite bit of programming for the computational physics aspects during my four university years, i still maintained a ‘hands-on’ approach with computer, to the point where I have never really had any computer that didn’t always have the sides off.

So if you one of those kids played with ‘Mechano’ or similar  when you were young and then went on to always taking things apart, just to see how they worked then you will probably end being  the same with your computer.

It was just a natural progression for me, even the first one I bought, the trs-80, i tried to get it apart, it was right pig too

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

That’ll be it for now, but keep watching cos this site is gonna get more stuff added every day from now on, all bout how 2 get the best from ur computer, ,,,,,, .
